Before we had millions of users, before we had a full suite of AI tools, and long before we were even called HomeDesignsAI, there was a simple, powerful idea. Like any good garden, our company has roots, and those roots trace back to one person: my dad.
This isn’t a story about technology. It’s the story of a conversation I had with my father at a Sunday barbecue, a conversation about a problem he faced every single day in his landscaping business. It’s about how solving that one problem for him became the mission that our entire company is built on today.
This is how it all began.
The Barbecue That Changed Everything
It was a sunny afternoon in the summer of 2023. We were gathered in the backyard for one of our usual Sunday barbecues. My dad was telling me he had lost another potential client that week. He sounded defeated.
Then, he looked at me and said something I’ll never forget. Of course, he said it in Romanian with his usual passion, but this is the translated version:
“Cristi (that’s how he calls me), if I just had something on my phone where I could take a picture of their yard and instantly show them how it would look when I’m done… my life would be so much easier.”
That single sentence planted a seed in my mind that would grow into everything we do today.
He wasn’t asking for complicated software. He was asking for a simple tool that could close the gap between his vision and his client’s imagination. He just needed a way to share the vision that was so clear in his mind.
A New Possibility in the AI Boom
That conversation happened at a very interesting time. You remember 2023, it felt like the whole world was buzzing about AI. Every day there was a new breakthrough, and it seemed like Artificial Intelligence was going from science fiction to a real tool that people could actually use.
My dad’s simple request clicked perfectly with this new reality. As I thought about his problem, I realized the solution might be right in front of us.
I started researching immediately, diving into the world of generative AI to see if it was mature enough to create the kind of high-quality, realistic visuals my dad would need to win over his clients. The more I learned, the more convinced I became that it was not only possible but that we could be the ones to build it.
Building It for Dad
That idea stuck with me. It felt so important and so real. I couldn’t stop thinking about it.
So, I got a small team together, and we poured everything we had into building what he had asked for. We weren’t trying to build a giant tech company; we were just trying to solve my dad’s problem. In about a month, we had the first version ready.
Naturally, he became our very first user.
I’ll never forget the first time he tried it. We were standing right there in our own backyard, the same place where we’d had the barbecue. He took out his phone and snapped a picture of our garden.
He first redesigned it in a “Modern” style. Then he tried the “Vegetable” style, and then another.
A huge smile spread across his face, which also made me smile. You could see the pride in his eyes as he looked at the screen, then back at me.
That was the moment I knew this was more than just a small project for my dad. Seeing his reaction convinced me that we had to continue, that we had to take this idea to the next level.
Our Mission is Still the Same
Today, HomeDesignsAI is used by over 2 million people, from architects and real estate agents to designers and, yes, many more landscapers.
But that simple idea from that Sunday barbecue is still the mission that drives our entire team. Every tool we create is built to help you share the picture in your head and let others see the beautiful spaces you imagine.
